| Twilight Film Review Twilight is the vampire movie of the year and it is the first time for a while that a vampire movie has been released. However, this vampire movie is different from its predecessors. In Twilight, the vampire character shows a softer side and a desire to do something other than suck the blood of everything that moves which is unusual for a vampire. Twilight has a romantic side to the film that takes the focus of the film from start to finish. The story starts with the character played by Kristin Stewart moving with her father to a new town and joining a brand new school. Being a normally reserved character she is apprehensive to make friends with the 'cool' crowd and instead just wants to live her life. Unfortunately, being in the quiet group at this high school means you are in a group with the vampires. After surviving the initial unusual male attention she forms a special bond with one boy in particular, Edward, who has a super human strength. As is the case with most Hollywood films, something that seems like it could be a simple story it becomes much more complicated. Another clan of vampires come to town and seem hell-bent on killing Kristin Stewart. It is up to Edward and his family to protect her from the others. While the film sounds like it could be quite good and at the start it is, there is not enough action to keep even the most patient of audiences entertained. From a vampire film you would normally expect plenty of action, violence and of course blood sucking. Instead there are a lot of close romantic scenes and plenty of soft dialogue which you would come to expect from a romantic comedy. The romantic side of the film and Robert Pattinson meant there were a lot of girls in the cinema and will probably mean Twilight will perform better in the box office than people may have expected. Unfortunately, it is the romantic side of the film that ruins it for me. There was the potential for a lot of vampire on vampire fighting but it never really materialises until the later stages of the film. There is too much boring dialogue between Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart. However, all of the cast give pretty good performances and it more the direction and writing of the film that may be to blame for its limited success. Admittedly, the director did not make as much freedom with the story as he may have liked because the film is based on the original series of books. For this reason, and then the inconclusive ending to the film it is likely that there will be a sequel to this Twilight film. Ultimately, there were a number of positives for me to include in my Twilight review including the high quality of acting and reasonable story line. However, there was not enough action to keep me entertained and my overall feeling of the film was one of disappointment rather than satisfaction. If there had been more action to the keep audience engaged from the start and if there had been a little bit less romance then it may have been a different story. While Twilight is about a vampire, the film itself is a romantic comedy rather than a vampire/horror/action movie which I expected it to be. |
