Chris' Verdict On The Happening: 6/10- "I found the basis of this plot
a bit unbelievable. People randomly start committing suicide. Moreover,
Mark Wahlberg skills can not cope with such a demanding role and he
should move back to more action packed movies."
Ellie's Verdict On The Happening: 7/10- "I enjoyed this thriller this a
degree but was left a little disappointing considering the previous works
of M.Night Shyamalan including Sixth Sense and The Signs. For The
Happening is still worth going to see."

The Happening Review
The Happening is said to be the newest summer blockbuster. The thriller
starts with the news revealing that something has been released into the
air. It is not known whether it is a nuclear weapon, a government
experiment which has turned into a disaster or a terrorist attack. Despite
not knowing what has happened people begin to panic.
The Happening, follows a school teacher played by Mark Wahlberg and
his wife played by Zooey Deschanel who desperately try to seek a safe
place for when the air becomes contaminated. At the same time, the
supporting class either decide to commit suicide or show great scenes of
absolute panic and confusion. The fact that so many people commit
suicide after having a normal everyday morning and then later finding
out that something unknown is out there appears to be a bit unrealistic.
However, really puts across the dark side of this situation.
While Wahlberg and Deschanel decide to leave for the country, they
meet John Leguizamo and his daughter. The previous scenes of their
travel to this point is at times disturbing, seeing how each place they
travel to reveals more desperation of the victims. However the ending
from this point then becomes predictable.
The actors themselves cause The Happening problems. After having
being released in the USA first, The Happening flopped at the box office
and seriously disappointed fans and critics. Wahlberg, associated with
big films such as ‘Signs’, gave a disappointing performance. In the film,
his marriage to Zooey Deschanel is on the rocks and so therefore their
onscreen relationship, although trying to portray this at times is
unrealistic and frustrating for the audience. The supporting cast who
face the terrible victimisation are also quite poor. There are many
scenes of traumatised faces and people in a state of confusion which
often leads to their suicide, however these scenes although deeply
disturbing are made funny by the quality of acting.
One of the main reasons why ‘The Happening’ has be much anticipated
this year is due to Night Shyamalan, his previous films which include,
‘The Village’, ‘Signs’, ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Unbreakable’ all have been
great hits in the world of cinema. Unfortunately, ‘The Happening’
probably will not have the same success. I personally would say ‘The
Happening’ is worth a visit to the cinema for, but do not go with high
expectations. Other critics have absolutely slaughtered this film but I
personally would not say it was terrible. ‘The Happening’ kept the
audience engaged enough to stay to the end and see the ending and for
me at times it was enjoyable.
