GRAN TORINO REVIEW

Certificate: 15

Genre: Crime

Chris' Verdict On Gran Torino Review: 9/10- "Gran Torino is an
utterly fantastic film that has humour, a good plot, grit, dialogue, romance
and action. It ticks all the boxes and is worth going to see just for Clint
Eastwood's fantastic performance."

Ellie's Verdict On Gran Torino Review: 7/10- "I do not normally enjoy
films as depressing as Gran Torino, however, I did really like the film.
While it is not an uplifting film, it is worth going to see and is a brilliant
film."

Gran Torino Review

Another year and Clint Eastwood, who seems as if he will be making films forever,
has made yet another classic and shown yet again what a Hollywood heavyweight
he still is. The Gran Torino gives very little away and I was not really sure what to
expect from this film that looked it had the makings of another Lakeview Terrace
like film. However, I was pleasantly surprised throughout the film and in particular
with the ending which is one of the best that I have seen for a long time and
probably just as sad as Million Dollar Baby to even the most insensitive viewer.

So what is the film about? Gran Torino is about a veteran war soldier/hero who
has just suffered the loss of his wife. Clint Eastwood's figure paints a cynical
picture of life and does his bed to avoid contact with the outside world, in particular
foreigners. Moreover, he is distant from his family and definitely does not trust
them as they earmark his various possessions for when he kicks the bucket. Then,
after a young kid tries to steal his prized possession, his Gran Torino 1972 car, he
takes him under his wing along with the rest of the family to protect them from the
horrors of an increasingly dangerous neighbourhood which has been taken over
by crime. I am not going to tell anymore because I might ruin the film somewhat for
you and if I told you the plot line then it might deter you from seeing Gran Torino.
Yes, the plot is very gritty and quite depressing in places but the film still works
and is enjoyable.

While some of the most cast members are recognisable from their small roles in
our films, Clint Eastwood is the main show and he steals the limelight for pretty
much the whole film. Subsequently, it is Clint Eastwood's performance that was
going to be the make or break for this and to be honest his performance is
fantastic. There is humour and wit mixed with a seriousness and ruthlessness that
is scary in places. Clint Eastwood is definitely still cool and has definitely still got
the goods to be one of Hollywood's finest. To my surprise, he is still in good
physical shape for his age although he has not quite gone to the Slyvester
Stallone extremes.

Overall, while there are other more uplifting and jovial films at the cinema at the
moment and there is still the spectacular box office event which is Slumdog
Millionaire but for me, Gran Torino is this month's film to see and is one of the best
films that I have seen in a long time. I would definitely recommend going this see
this film unless you are feeling a little bit down then the film might make your mood
even worse. I am buying Gran Torino on DVD and adding it to my Clint Eastwood
collection.
