| Four Christmases DVD Review Four Christmases stars to of Hollywood's favourite actors, Vince Vaughan and Reese Witherspoon. The two stars play Brad and Kate respectively. The two are a typical, relatively wealthy, San Francisco couple that decide to travel the world at Christmas rather than taking the time to spend the family holiday with their family. The excuses themselves are terrible, they use the pretence that they are doing charity work abroad when instead they are jet setting to some of the most popular holiday destinations. However, this Christmas promises to be very different and there get away scheme is exposed when a local news crew films them trying to catch their cancelled flight at the airport. After the news report, the two have to tour their divorced parents which means Four Christmases. Along the way, that might some interesting parents played by some of Hollywood's best including Robert Duvall and Jon Voight. Four Christmases has a number of fundamental problems that prevent it from ever becoming the success it might have been. One of these problems is the inconsistency in the theme of the film. Even the type of humour changes from the start to the end. There are moments of more slap-stick and then attempted depth. Rather than being a good blend of the two it is a pretty bad mix that never really managed to work. Moreover, Seth Gordon, the director, must also take the blame for the disappointing climax. There is plenty of time to fit in a decent ending but instead the crescendo of the Four Christmases is crammed into a relatively short final scene that left me disappointed. The crucial errors in the basis of the film might have been redeemed had Four Christmases been hilarious. However, the humour is quite distasteful in parts and relatively poor. For example, a baby vomiting over Reese Witherspoon is really not that funny at all and actually cringe-worthy. Nevertheless, there are some scenes that are really funny but they are simply not enough to save the film. For those you that are simply wanting to see this film because of the cast then you are partly justified in your decision. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughan are both excellent and there are some humorous cameos from Robert Duvall and others as the estranged family of the couple. Vince Vaughan is likely to come under criticism for appearing in both Four Christmases and Fred Claus but in my opinion the film's potential poor showing is not the cast's fault. Ultimately, Four Christmases is destined to have poor results at the box office despite the Christmas theme. Although the cast all provide decent performances and there are some laughs, there is simply not enough to make the film worth going to see. For me, the ending of the film is symbolical of the disappointment that I felt. For Vince Vaughan, I think he should look carefully at the script before deciding to make another Christmas themed movie. |
