Fool's Gold Review
Ben “Finn” Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a surf bum turned treasure hunter
obsessed with finding an 18th century Queen’s Dowry. ‘Fools Gold’ also stars Kate
Hudson as Tess, Ben’s ex wife who once again falls in love with ‘Finn’ after joining
him in the hunt for the missing jewels. Ray Winstone and others after the treasure
complicate the film as the story begins to unravel and the race to find the treasure
begins.
The first thing to examine is the acting performances of the cast. This is one of the
many areas where this film is seriously lacking. Kate Hudson and Matthew
McConaughey provide something for both the male and female audience
respectively, but their acting skills leave a lot to be desired. Ray Winstone is funny
and rough as always but even he does not leave up to his normal standards. There
is some defence for the cast, because it is the script and unfunny gags that really let
the film down, leaving the cast little to work with. Of all the actors Kate Hudson
provides the best performance and looked at home in ‘Fools Gold’. However,
Matthew McConaughey the co-star is probably the worst.
Next, the plot is another area which lets down ‘Fools Gold’ down dramatically. The
plot is so predictable it is laughable. At no point in the film is there any surprise or
even something that is not obvious. ‘Fools Gold’ is supposed to be a romantic
comedy but it lacks any comedy and the romance is not well developed. There are
countless gags in this film but they are so plain and so bad. The lack of comedy
came as surprise because there previous joint venture, 'How To Lose A Guy In Ten
Days' was a well constructed funny film albeit not a classic. I have to say that the
attempted accents by characters like Ray Winstone did make me laugh but I do not
think that was intended. Even the romance is unconvincing and the ending of the
film is clear within 5 minutes.
The directing is ok but there is little to actually direct. Some of the action scenes did
remind me of Pirates of The Caribbean showing a complete lack of imagination but
again making me laugh. The corny scenes are so made and the ending is so cliche
that I felt sick. I am sure that ‘Fools Gold’ will make enough money for films like this
to continue to be made even though ‘Fools Gold’ has performed terribly in both the
US and now the UK despite the extensive ad campaign.
Ultimately, ‘Fools Gold’ is poor and is likely to continue to perform badly. The plot of
the film is lame and predictable. The dialogue and script are cliche and corny to the
extreme. The acting is bad and the attempted accents by distinguished cast
members like Ray Winstone are laughable. ‘Fools Gold’ is definitely a miss and I can
think of few people who would enjoy the film. ‘Fools Gold’ is not worth going to see
and not worth buying on DVD.
