CHANGELING DVD REVIEW

Certificate: 18

Genre: Thriller

Chris' Verdict On Changeling DVD: 7/10- "This is one of the most gripping and
intense films that I have seen for a long time. The subject matter and plot were a bit
too depressing for me to really enjoy the film as much as I wanted to."

Ellie's Verdict On Changeling DVD: 7/10- "Angelina Jolie is definitely back on top
form with this incredibly full-on and intense performance. There are some things that
let the film down but I would recommend going to see it."

Changeling DVD Review

Following in the tradition of his previous films, director Clint Eastwood has cast
arguably one of Hollywood's toughest women in the form of Angelina Jolie.
Changeling is set in 1920s Los Angeles, in a time where women have a limited voice
and the police force is corrupt. The story evolves as Angelina's Jolie character's son
is kidnapped and then a little while later miraculously returned leaving her certain that
it is indeed someone else's son that she has been given. Christine, the character
played by Angelina Jolie, then launched herself on a mission to find her real son
Walter. As she begins to dig deeper and publicly claim that the boy in her possession
is not Walter, Christine is sent off to a psychiatric ward where the only way she can
leave is to sign a document stating that the boy they have given her is Walter. John
Malkovich also stars as a man willing to help the women in need and get to the
bottom of the whole fiasco. Changeling is yet another thriller of epic propositions from
Clint Eastwood.

Changeling can certainly not be described as an upbeat film and is unlikely to leave
you with a positive outlook on life. Within a short while you are drawn into the struggle
that Christine undertakes and desperate for her to succeed and be united with her
real son. This attachment is only achieved through intensity and somewhat
depressing scenes. The intensity and melancholic nature of the early stages of the
film may be too much to handle for some cinema goers. The sombre feel is
maintained through more and more adversity, a sense of injustice and not a bit of
humour in site. I think you definitely have to be in the mood to enjoy Changeling. In
addition, those of you who go to the cinema to relax and enjoy a film should not go to
see Changeling. Only those that feel asleep were able to relax and although I thought
the film was good it is difficult to say that I actually enjoyed the experience.

In terms of the acting and directing of the film they are both faultless. Angelina Jolie is
both absorbing to the audience and committed to her role. Her performance could
mean that she may mount a challenge for the Best Actress Oscar. Even if she does
not scoop the academy award she is likely to receive many awards and silence some
of her critics following recent performances in the sub-standard Wanted, Tomb
Raider and others. With regards to John Malkovich, he is excellent and convincing as
always. He plays an assured character who is willing to go the extra mile to help a
woman in desperate need. Clint Eastwood's directing is good again but I am
beginning to wonder if he is capable of doing films that are even a slightly bit less
morbid. While is not as sad as Million Dollar Baby, it still emotionally effect and drains
the audience like few other films. There is no place for humour in Changeling.

Overall, Changeling is a film that was really good without me actually enjoying the
experience. I will probably buy the DVD as a collectors item rather than because I will
want to watch the film over and over again. If you enjoyed Million Dollar Baby and
intense thrillers like the Good Shepard then you enjoy Changeling. For those of you
who want to relax and enjoy your cinema experience then I would not recommend
seeing this film. Ultimately, the excellent plot, gripping dialogue and convincing acting
mean Changeling is destined to receive numerous awards.
