| Bolt Review Bolt is another animated 3D disney film although it is the first under the new head John Lasseter. Like the other animated Disney films, the voices are provided by some recognisable figures which as always adds to the film. Miley Cyrus and John Travolta are amongst the stars providing the voices. As you might expect, this is a typical Disney tale of Bolt, the dog, going through a troubling time and he has to battle through it with the help of his friends and in the end everything is ok. Of course the whole experience has improved Bolt as a dog. If you enjoy this type of cliche story that is the basis of nearly all Disney films these days then you will enjoy this film. For me, there would a lot of comparisons that could be made between this film and Cars another Disney Pixar creation. Subsequently, I will be using Cars as a reference point in this Bolt review. For me, the make or break for a Disney film is the comedy. In a modern Disney film, the ending of the film is always pretty predictable no matter how unlikely a positive outcome may seem. Therefore, the comedy is required firstly to add some life to the predictable plot and secondly to keep the adults, who have been forced to come and see the film with their children, interested. In this area, Bolt does deliver although there was possibly a potential for a bit more humour, there is enough to keep Bolt going. While it is funnier than Cars, it does not reach the heights of Toy Story, The Incredibles and other Disney hits. In an animated film, it is obviously difficult to judge the acting ability of the cast and I do not have enough knowledge to tell whether the animation was good or not because the animations always seem amazing to me. However, we can to some extent assess the performance of each of the cast members' voices or at least their influence on the film. John Travolta and Miley Cyrus' voices are both the two most recognisable in the film. This was a clever ploy by the makers of Blot because the voice of John Travolta will be automatically known by adults and unrecognisable to children while Miley Cyrus would spark screams from the hordes of children while John Travolta would probably mean nothing. Back to the point! The voices of both John Travolta definitely add to the film and made it more enjoyable because I was able to put a face to the voice. Overall, Bolt is mainly going to appeal to children and Bolt is likely to be popular among its main target audience. For adults reading this review who are considering taking their children, I think even a more mature audience can enjoy the film and some of the jokes are definitely tailored to an older audience. For teenagers and everyone else, unless you usually like corny Disney films like me, then you should probably steer clear of this film. |
