| Tropic Thunder DVD Review Robert Downey Jnr and Jack Black have teamed up to create their own satirical comedy. Unusually, in Tropic Thunder, each actor plays an actor; Jack Black, plays a washed out comedian who is struggling with his addiction. Ben Stiller directs and stars as the commander in chief of the whole operation. Completing the trio of Hollywood stars is Robert Downey Jnr who is, "the dude playing the dude". You've seen Apocalypse Now, now comes the satirical and supposedly funny version. Like me, you are probably thinking, who better to satirise something as potentially sensitive as Vietnam, then Jack Black and Ben Stiller? As you might expect from a film with a plot as unlikely as that of Tropic Thunder, the narrative and dialogue Tropic Thunder disappoint on both counts. While Tropic Thunder has plenty of comic potential it never really manages to get started. Downey Jnr's black street talk becomes repetitive and unamusing despite a promising start, while Ben Stiller and Jack Black run around acting crazy in the hope of finding something funny lurking in the jungle. Despite not reaching its comic potential, Tropic Thunder is still a decent movie. Unfortunately, none of the cast can leave the war zone unscathed, all of them need to move on from this distinctively average film. Ironically, it is the A-list qualities of the cast that mean Tropic Thunder will still draw in the crowds and perform well at the box office no matter how good the film really is. Tropic Thunder's spectacular special effects took me by surprise and are a par with other recent action films like Transformers. For Ben Stiller, Tropic Thunder is small improvement from 'The Heartbreak Kid' but he is still not performing at his best. Overall, I thought Tropic Thunder was worth going to see but I was left disappointed by the lack of comedy. |
