As a guy, I should probably not be writing this review. Nevertheless, I will do my best to give a fair and unbiased view of the film even though I do not think under any circumstances it could be considered a guy film. The basis of the film is a young girl who is planning to get married and wants her father to be at the wedding to give her away. There is one major problem, not only are her mum and dad no longer together but to make matters worse, the mother, played by Meryl Streep, has no idea who the father is. After careful consideration she manages to narrow it down to three potential candidates. Unknown to her mother, the daughter invites all three of the candidates to their home in the sun. For those of you that have already seen the hit musical then you will know what to expect. Mamma Mia is a musical in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of musicals and for me just as I was getting remotely interested in the plot of the film, which was not very often, I was then having to watch a corny dance number. I am not sure if it was better or worse that I knew the words to the songs. However, for those of you that like to sing along and dance at the front of the cinema you will enjoy that the songs are pretty much well known, even to me. Seen as this film is a musical, I think it is probably fair to include the singing in this Mamma Mia review. For me, the singing is a bad experience that goes from bad to completely unbearable. Pierce Brosnan in particular can not sing to save his life and I hope he steers clear of musicals in the future. While it could have been amusing if he sang the odd line, he lost his endearing characteristics the more and more he sung. In you are able to see beyond the singing and big dance numbers then the plot and story of the film is actually ok even though it lacks a certain depth. Meryl Streep and the other more recognisable cast members give decent performances when they have the chance to act. There is some humour in the film. If there had not been so much bad singing then the occasional bit of bad singing from Hollywood's finest would have been amusing but there was too much bad singing. Ultimately, I personally hated the whole Mamma Mia experience from start to finish and was definitely considering the leaving the cinema full of girls early. However, girls of all ages will love this film because it is the girl film! Indeed, my local cinema has even started running sing-a-long versions of the film for those girls that thinking seeing the film once was just not enough. Overall, if you are a guy then you will not enjoy this film at all, however, for girls that love to sing and dance, you will love this film from start to finish. Mamma Mia is being billed as the feel good film of the year and it is, if you are a girl! |
