another potential family hit. Compared to the animated 'Monster House', this is a real-life sci-fi fantasy that
tries to lure you into thinking that it is reality. 'Monster House' had a number of flaws that meant it was
never able to fulfil its potential. In 'City of Ember' it is clear that Kenan has learnt some lessons and
produced a family masterpiece. The excellent story telling and charming performances help to immerse the
family audience into the fantasy world. The story begins with two friends Lina, a messenger, and Doon, a
pipe-fixer, struggling to survive in the depths of the city. As the story unfolds, it is clear that the future of
the 'City of Ember' is under threat and its demise is imminent. The lazy and complacent major seems
unwilling to act and its up to the two children to save the city before it is lost forever. Lina and Doon must
pit themselves against the pompous major, played by Bill Murray, and his side-kicks if they want to save
the city.

'City of Ember' is being billed as the family adventure of 2008 and it did not disappoint. As the film
progresses the story continues to evolve and the two leads travel deeper and deeper into the city and
discover a whole of host of weird and wonderful animals to satisify even the wildest imagination. While on
the surface, 'City of Ember' is a fun family film and a welcome break from the troubles of real-life, the film
also has an important lying message that could be important in years to come. The efforts of the two main
protagonists show that the energy and enthusiasm of the young can stop the complacement elders from
destroying their future. Some of the cast members are widely recognisable, with Mackenzie Crook and Bill
Murray both giving fun and interesting performances.

'City of Ember is based on an adaptation created by Caroline Thompson who is more famous for the
creation of 'Edward Scissorhands'. Unlike some of the more recent children fantasy films, this film has
something to offer to the more mature viewer. There is some humour and enough quality acting and action
to keep an audience of all ages entertained. While this genre has a long way to come before it is on the
same level as the animated children movies, 'City of Ember' marks a big shift and improvement in children
fantasy films. 'City of Ember' has plenty of action, adventure, suspense, friendship and is a definite
must-see family film. Even if you are a teenage viewer you may still enjoy the film.
